In the afternoon of September 24, 2024, Dr. Fan Wei, editor in chief of Natural Materials, came to the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences at the invitation of Professor Huang Hui to give a lecture on the theme of "Introduction of Nature Series Journals and Publishing Road of High impact Papers", which was held in 214, Teaching Building 1.
This lecture first introduced the overview of the Nature series of journals. The Nature series of journals has a long history and is one of the earliest international scientific journals in the world. Its original intention was to make scientific knowledge public in the form of science popularization. The Nature series of journals covers multiple fields such as materials science, life science, physical science, chemical science, etc. They often publish research results with significant scientific significance and have a high influence and status in the global scientific community.
Then the lecture will use the journal "Natural Materials" as an example to introduce the specific process of paper review. When submitting an article, the title should be concise, easy to understand, and eye-catching; During the editing and review stage, editors attach great importance to the innovative points of the article, the significance of the research work, and the potential impact; When replying to the reviewer, it is necessary to carefully reply to each point and try to use new experimental data to support the viewpoint of the article. Subsequently, the lecture emphasized the importance of structured writing in conjunction with published papers. A high impact article often tells a good story and has clear logic. Its content will start from the big background, gradually explain the specific research field and experimental results, and finally point out the important contribution of the research results to the relevant field.
At the end of the lecture, Editor Fan Wei and everyone discussed how to correctly select reviewers, whether the number of authors will affect the acceptance of articles, and whether editors will use AI tools to review articles. The lecture sparked a lively discussion among teachers and classmates.
Dr. Fan Wei serves as a senior editor in the journal Nature Materials, responsible for reviewing articles on cutting-edge topics such as semiconductor devices, optoelectronic materials, flexible electronics, and neuromorphic computing. Previously, he served as an editor for the Nature Communications journal for many years, responsible for reviewing articles in the fields of condensed matter physics such as topological states and superconducting materials. He also briefly worked in the publishing department of Science magazine, responsible for external liaison and strategic partner development. He received his doctorate in condensed matter physics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After graduating with a PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Chemistry in Japan. His research interests include low dimensional semiconductor devices, molecular electronic devices, multiferroic oxides, and electromagnetic properties of strongly correlated materials.
